From San Vito sul Cesano to Montesecco
From San Vito sul Cesano, continue downhill toward the valley floor along a secondary road. This leads you across the main highway (strada statale) before heading toward Montesecco.
About 600 meters after the highway, immediately after crossing a bridge, you will have two choices:
- The Main Route: This is a must if you plan to eat or stay overnight at Agriturismo Lo Sgorzolo. To follow this path, take the small road on the right just after the bridge. It follows a stretch along the Cesano River and climbs through the fields, emerging just past the agriturismo.
- The Alternative Route: Continue straight for another 300 meters and take the gravel road on your left. This path passes through a very scenic viewpoint facing south and leads you to the Montesecco cemetery.
Both variants are roughly the same length and rejoin just below the village of Montesecco.
Montesecco and the Way to Mezzanotte
Upon arriving in Montesecco, enter through the ancient gate and walk up the street that runs along the walls until you reach the square of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. From here, you can admire the rolling hills of the Valcesano stretching all the way to the Adriatic Sea! Just a few meters away is the main square, where you will find the former town hall and a water fountain. We highly recommend climbing to the highest point of Montesecco, to the so-called Piazza del Castello (Castle square).
From Montesecco, the journey continues downhill along a dirt road that starts at the first hairpin bend leaving the village, which will lead you to the paved road. After about 500 meters, take another dirt road on the left.
Detour: If you are staying at B&B I Magnoni or eating at Agriturismo Locanda Magnoni (these two facilities are 50m apart and both take their name from the locality, but are separate businesses), continue straight for another 500 meters, then take the gravel road on the right; you will reach your destination after about 1.7 km.
Returning to the main trail, the next stop is the hamlet of Mezzanotte (Municipality of Pergola). Before reaching it, you will pass near two accommodations: Merlino Agricamping and Casa Sponge B&B, which also serves as an artist residency.
The last leg and arrival in Pergola
From Mezzanotte, the path winds mainly along gravel roads, except for the final stretch on asphalt—the same road you traveled in the opposite direction on the first day. However, being a countryside road, there is very little traffic as you head back into Pergola.
Places along this stage
Montesecco is a hamlet in the Municipality of Pergola, situated among the hills at 456 meters above sea level, about 7 km from the main town. The first records of Montesecco date back to the 13th century, though there are reasons to believe it is much older. The small square in front of the church is undoubtedly one of the best viewpoints in the Cesano Valley; from here, you can admire the expanse of hills dotted with scattered houses, gravel roads, cultivated fields, rows of vines... and the Adriatic Sea in the distance.
