Pergola and the Gilded Bronzes (Bronzi Dorati)
Pergola, the starting and ending point of the Gilded Bronzes Way (Cammino dei Bronzi Dorati), is a town located in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, in the Marche region of Italy.
Founded in 1234, Pergola is renowned for its charming historic center, characterized by numerous churches and well-preserved historic buildings. The territory of Pergola stretches across picturesque hills and offers typical landscapes of the Marche region, ideal for hiking, cycling, or horseback riding.
The area is also celebrated for its food and wine production, particularly Visciolata (sour cherry wine), and its traditional fairs and festivals, such as the National White Truffle Fair. Pergola’s location, halfway between the Apennines and the Adriatic coast, makes it an ideal base for exploring both the hilly hinterland and the region’s beaches.
One of its most famous attractions is the Museum of the Gilded Bronzes and the City of Pergola (Museo dei Bronzi Dorati e della Città di Pergola), which houses the exceptional Roman-era gilded bronze sculptural group—the only one of its kind in the world. Our trail begins right at the Museum, taking its name from the famous sculptures preserved there. Naturally, the trail also passes through Cartoceto di Pergola, the site where they were discovered in 1947.
